Eleven countries in Africa are currently witnessing or have experienced the fourth wave of COVID-19, stated the head of Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
In the weekly virtual press briefing, John Nkengasong, the center’s director, said that these countries include Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Eritrea, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Somalia and Tunisia. He added that Mauritius has actually been experiencing a fifth wave.
He emphasized that the waves will continue unless vaccinations are ramped up and good public health measures are maintained. The continent has received 403 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines but only 55% of them have been used thus far. Just 6.6% of the population on the continent is fully vaccinated.
However, he mentioned that some countries have made good progress. Morocco has got 61% of its population fully vaccinated, Tunisia has 33%, Egypt has 12% and Algeria has 11%... (Anadolu Agency, November 25, 2021)
